Q. What are the objectives of the YPinLG?
The main objectives of the Young Professionals in Local Government network (Livewire) are to:
1. provide an opportunity to discuss,debate, progress issues and points of interest.
2. provide a professional network that is creative and interactive support career planning
3. improve local government knowledge (operations)
4. encourage diversity in local government (occupation, gender, culture, age)
5. establish coaching and mentoring opportunities
6. provide an opportunity for general managers to share knowledge and experience
7. influence and design professional development programs
8. investigate and facilitate secondments
9. provide the opportunity for social activities and a social network
10. support other LGMA groups and regions, and other associations.
Q. What if I'm not a manager, can I still become a member of YPinLG?
Hell yeah, the aim of the Network is to develop your talent, confidence, expertise and personal relationships so that you become a manager and an effective leader when you do make it!
In addition, many of our members do not hold managerial positions, including members on the Executive team!
Further, we are about promoting Leaders and not just Managers. There is a big difference and that is what we are about.
Q. I'm in my early twenties can I be a member?
Yes, the YPinLG strongly encourages professionals from all ages and is actively seeking younger members. The Group was established for the very reason of bringing younger professionals together and ensuring they have the opportunity to continually develop their skills and experiences.
By having members of all ages the Network creates greater diversity that enhances the effectivness of the Network in promoting the needs of younger professionals.
Q. Why Should I attend YPin LG Events?
If your cool you'll get yourself along to one of our events because they promote individuality, diversity and give you great professional development. You will get to meet other local government professionals in all areas of councils and widen your network!
Q. What does Livewire mean?
It means your ready for action, to jump on any project with enthusiasm, determination and to get results.
Q. What if I'm not a member of a professional association, such as IPWEA, DEPA or the LGMA, can I still be involved in the YPinLG Network?
Yes. The YPinLG Network welcomes and encourages professionals from all occupations, you do not have to be a member of any association to be involved with or benefit from the YPinLG Network.
If you are a member of an association well that is OK too! YPinLG are always looking to expand their professional relationships to improve the benefits offered to members.
Q. Can I start a ‘Young Professionals in Local Government’ group in my region?
Yes- A number of areas including Southern are currently planning to establish a regional network coordinated by local young professionals. To find out more about starting your own regional network email us here and we (Executive Committee) will follow up.
Q. Can I start a similar network in my own Council?
Yes- This is exactly what we want to promote - young professionals from a variety of backgrounds within authorities networking.
