Caesareans heading to danger level?

The Sydney Morning Herald headline today suggests that the 30% caesarean rate is too high and that authorities need to turn back the tide. Personally I think this is a bit of a fuss about nothing. I've had 2 and was concious throughout with no adverse effects apart from a well hidden scar and would much prefer this to the trauma of childbirth. Women should have the choice to elect for C section - this is an advantage of modern medicine

C section is major surgery and shouldn't be an option taken lightly. If you are educated properly about childbirth there is nothing traumatic about it. There are so many horror stories you here about giving birth women have become scared of it and resort to drastic options like caesareans. I completely agree with caesars when they are necessary but think we need to re-educate women about all the positives of vaginal birth.

The fact that women choosing unnecessary surgery are choosing to put themselves and their babies at a higher risk of complications is becoming more widely recognised. However this trend is also impacting on all women using maternity services. Caesareans cost more money to the system, and take up a lot more medical and midwifery time. The care of women and babies following caesarean section is extremely labour intensive and the more caesars on a ward, the less time there is to look after all the other women and babies. A lot of dissatisfaction that women feel after giving birth is centered around the lack of support they receive, and this will only get worse as the trend for surgical delivery increases.

I can't quite understand how anyone could promote caesarean section when they have never experienced natural birth. Just because you can find a doctor who is willing to perform unnecessary surgery is not a good reason to do it.

The problem is that everyone who has had a caesar thinks it was justified. While ever the medical profession supports this position we will never have a turn around. Women aren't going to go against their Drs.

Yes I agree. It is the whole system - doctors/midwives/women/husbands that need to be educated. IT is hard to know how to start.
