Carbon taxes to erode profit to taxpayer

The link below is to a report that Dr Clive Hamilton thinks any new owner will demand indemnities against carbon tax liabilities and that this would cost the taxpayers most of the gains that the sell off would make. Also it would be giving away the opportunity to make money by redcing emissions. Has Iemma even looked at these issues?

Thanks Monty - your link is probably more obvious but I have attached the media release and the report from the Australia Institute in the Library. Hamilton's argument seems pretty obvious. Why would someone invest in the industry without indemnities when thay are pretty certain to have a carbon trading scheme introduced with unknown costs to them. The NSW government have a track record of paying for their mistakes including the airport rail link and motorways.

Thanks for posting the report Greg. This is not an industry we can afford to have go bust like the cross city tunnel did - if there really are no indemnities being given then wouldnt it be smart to call the sale off until the carbon price is fixed? Then we might get more for the assets.

Seems logical to me - I can't see how a sale price could be maximised without the purchaser being able to able to factor in such a major unknown as carbon trading.
