In 2007 Council adopted the Port Stephens Economic Development Plan and in this draft Plan it is proposed that business rate payers in the LGA have a variation to their rates to fund implementing this strategy. Goal 5 of the draft Plan sets out what will be done in the next 4 years. Please comment.

Can someone please explain why business should be slugged again and again???? seriously business is taxed to the hilt already what will be the return on investment? im am so over this "pie in the sky" thinking, for example name one council that has employed an economic employment department that has actually put long term bums on seats

I agree with David. The big expense areas (eg. Tomago development) will have very little benefit for existing small businesses. It seems very unfair to call on them to fund this strategy.

Come on Mr Gessling the above question is straight forward enough, what will be the return on investment for small business with the levey as proposed??? Who in council is consulting with Business or will it be another of the plethora of out of district consultants that will deliver "text book" studies that have little or no relevance to the actual on the ground conditions facing the average business owner in the Port Stephens LGA

Objective 5.2.2 - Why is Raymong Terrace the primary service centre? Aren't most of the population further east? Wouldn't it make more sense to strenghted the Salamander shopping centree?

Obj 5.2.3 - agree

obj 5.2.4 - This objective isn't self explanatory

obj 5.2.5 - agree

obj 5.2.6 - agree

obj 5.2.7 - agree

obj 5.2.8 - agree

obj 5.2.9 - this reads more like a call for another strategy - good idea in principle but not enough detail to comment

Objective 5.2.2 - the State Government's Lower Hunter Strategy designated Raymond Terrace as the "major service centre" for our LGA.

What a cop out answer, in other words council didnt have anything to with the choice of the major service centre being the Terrace, the people certainly where not consulted, why isnt there some sopught of a "kiosk" approach set up at Salamnder Bay, or has this decision been made for us because us poor residents arent smart or savvy enough to understand

Council has no business being involved in economic development. It should concentrate on it's core business and get that right before sticking their nose into things they know nothing about.

Core business being ...... whether Council officers believe it's antiquated or not...... roads, drains, footpaths, parking, parks and reserves and basic infrastructure.

The track record for public entitities to succeed in the private world is not good due to all the constraints on what they can and can't do in order to remains accountable to us - the ratepayers and residents and to the multi layers of government above them.

Local Council is not getting it right at present with core business, let alone venturing into the unknown.
