I am in total agreeance with the Governments decision to start saving money. Our demographics have changed and therefore the facilities in our communities need to change. Instead of schools in some spots, we need health centres and facilities for an ageing population. We also need affordable housing.
I think this is prevelant throughout Weston Creek. I don't think the Government should sell the land. I think the Government should be the developer for all these old school sites. If there is money to be had, it should go straight into the ACT budget.
I would like to see multi-purpose developments produced. We should learn a lesson from the Dutch here, and even some developments in places like Melbourne. The Government should build housing of all types, all mixed with eachother, and sell it at reasonable prices. Sporting facilities should be considered as well as community centres.
However, these extra facilities should only be built if they will not impact on the viability of other centres and only if a sound business case can be developed for their existence. There is no point building more meeting places if they get used by only a couple of groups and sit there empty the rest of the time.
I think well designed, mixed housing should be the target. But please pick a good architect! More brown brick boxes with a little winding shared concrete driveway would not be welcome.
