6My name is Patrick:
I'm now in my 60's and still enjoy bike riding. I believe more could be done in ways of educating children on the safety aspect of cycling.
When I was at primary school in the UK back in the 1950's bike education was a big issue. At that time the local police in conjunction with schools conducted what was called 'The cycling proficiency test'. Each week the kids would roll up to the school playground and be taught road rules and safe cycling, (similar to driving lessons). A local bike mechanic also came along to teach us minor repairs that we could carry out.
After a few weeks we were given the 'Proficiency Test' and if we passed got our certificates; an honourable moment indeed! I have never forgotten what I was taught all those years ago.
Perhaps some thought could be given to starting a similar scheme here. Safety on bikes has to be an absolute priority
